The Benefits of Sending Salawāt on the Prophet ﷺ
The Benefits of Sending Salawāt on the Prophet ﷺ
One of the simplest yet most powerful acts of worship a believer can perform is sending ṣalawāt (salutations and blessings) upon the Prophet Muḥammad ﷺ. This short phrase, often said as Allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā Muḥammad, carries immense spiritual reward and connects us directly to Allah and His Messenger ﷺ.
1. Obedience to Allah
Allah Himself sends blessings upon the Prophet ﷺ and commands the believers to do the same:
“Indeed Allah and His angels send blessings upon the Prophet. O you who believe, send blessings upon him and greetings of peace.”
(Qur’an 33:56)
Every time we recite ṣalawāt, we are fulfilling a direct command from our Lord.
2. Receiving Allah’s Mercy and Blessings
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“Whoever sends one ṣalāh upon me, Allah will send ten ṣalāh upon him.”
(Muslim, 408)
Allah’s ṣalāh means mercy, forgiveness, and elevation in rank. A single prayer upon the Prophet ﷺ multiplies into abundant blessings for us.
3. Forgiveness and Elevation
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ also said:
“Whoever sends ṣalāh upon me once, Allah will erase ten sins from him, grant him ten rewards, and raise him by ten degrees.”
(al-Nasā’ī, 1297)
Through this simple remembrance, sins are wiped away and our station with Allah rises.
4. A Means to the Prophet’s Intercession
On the Day of Judgment, everyone will be in need of intercession. The Prophet ﷺ said:
“The closest people to me on the Day of Resurrection will be those who sent the most ṣalāh upon me.”
(al-Tirmidhī, 484)
Frequent salawāt strengthens our bond with him ﷺ in this world and the next.
5. Acceptance of Duʿā
Our duʿās are more complete and more likely to be accepted when they begin and end with ṣalawāt. The Prophet ﷺ taught his companions to include it in their prayers, making it a key to answered supplications.
6. Peace of Heart and Connection
The Prophet ﷺ encouraged us to send abundant blessings on Fridays:
“Send much ṣalāh upon me on Friday, for your ṣalāh is presented to me.”
(Abū Dāwūd, 1531)
This constant remembrance nurtures love and connection with him ﷺ.
7. Protection from Neglect
He ﷺ warned against forgetting to send salawāt:
“May the man before whom I am mentioned and he does not send ṣalāh upon me be humiliated.”
(al-Tirmidhī, 3545)
Neglecting this remembrance leads to spiritual loss.
A Simple Daily Practice
To build this habit, you can set aside a few moments each day:
- Morning & Evening: Recite ṣalawāt 10–100 times.
- Before Duʿā: Begin and end with ṣalawāt.
- On Fridays: Increase your remembrance throughout the day.
Even small, consistent amounts carry immense benefit.
Conclusion
Sending salawāt is a light action with heavy rewards: it fulfills Allah’s command, brings His mercy, forgives sins, raises ranks, strengthens our bond with the Prophet ﷺ, and beautifies our supplications.
Let us make it part of our daily habit, so that our tongues are moist with his remembrance and our hearts are filled with love for the Messenger ﷺ.
“Indeed, Allah and His angels send blessings upon the Prophet. O you who believe, send blessings upon him and greetings of peace.”
